A judicial investigation into the Sipajhar shooting incident, which claimed the lives of at least two people on September 23, last year, has begun. The committee, led by Justice (Retd) BD Agarwal, visited Dhalpur at Sipajhar in Assam’s Darrang district on Tuesday to gather firsthand information about the incident. The panel met with Darrang district administration officials, stakeholders, victims’ families, individuals, and volunteer organisations.
“Today chairman of the committee made a preliminary visit to the district prior to the starting of the judicial procedures. He visited the site of incident, interacted with the senior officials of the district and police administration and also spoke to the public who had assembled at the circuit house,” Darrang deputy commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah informed Northeast Now on Tuesday evening.
“He (chairman of the committee) briefed the public about the judicial hearing procedure. No statement was recorded by him”, he added.
The Assam government formed a judicial inquiry committee to look into the clashes that erupted in Assam’s Sipajhar district on September 23, last year, during an eviction drive.
Locals protested on September 23, last year, when officials from the Darrang district administration, backed by a large contingent of armed security personnel, arrived in the Siajhar-Dholpur area to carry out an eviction drive.
The protest quickly turned violent, with demonstrators wielding sticks and other sharp weapons against police officers and other district administration officials.
When the situation became out of control, the police resorted to lathi-charge. However, with the situation still out of control and being attacked, the police resorted to opening fire, killing two people.
