The Gauhati High Court denied bail to globally known Assamese inventor and Padma Shri awardee Uddhab Bharali in a case involving alleged molestation of a juvenile girl.
Following the denial of his bail application, Uddhab Bharali surrendered to the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Friday. Uddhab Bharali was sentenced to 14 days in judicial detention by the CJM court in Lakhimpur.
The Gauhati High Court denied Uddhab Bharali’s bail application late Thursday night. Bharali was charged with abusing a juvenile while she was under his foster care under the POCSO Act.
On December 17, police filed a FIR against him, claiming provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act, in response to a complaint from a Chief Judicial Magistrate who was briefed by the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA), Lakhimpur.
Meanwhile, despite disputing the claims, Uddhab Bharali expressed trust in the judiciary. He stated that he would fight for justice and begged that he be allowed to wait for the truth to triumph.
Bharali has denied all allegations against him and said that he is not involved in any ill deed. Reacting to the court’s order to send him to jail, he said that he will utilise his time behind the bars to complete a handbook and research for further inventions. He added that he would like to do something for the betterment of street animals after his release from jail.
“Whatever my circumstances may be, I know I am innocent and soon I’ll return and start my inventions. If God permits, I’ll complete my handbook for inventors,” he said.
