An undertrial prisoner suspected of drug trafficking and robbery allegedly escaped from a hospital at the Lakhimpur district’s COVID care centre. Raju Baruah alias Girjai, the accused, has been in judicial prison since September 2021.
He recently tested positive for COVID-19 and was sent to a COVID care centre for treatment, but he managed to flee the hospital on Saturday morning.
The accused is a 40-year-old Dhakuakhana resident. Raju, who was detained in September, allegedly attempted to flee police custody even earlier but was injured during the attempt due to police shooting.
The prisoner reportedly took advantage of the hurry caused by the increasing number of COVID-19 cases. Before being arrested in September, he had served a jail term of eight years and came out of the prison in 2020. He was involved in various illegal activities.
