With the Assam government accepting the VRS of 39 doctors at the same time, concerns have been raised about the number of vacancies in the state’s medical college hospitals.
While new medical college hospitals are being built in Assam, concerned citizens have raised their eyebrows at the senior medical fraternity seeking voluntary retirement.
On November 25, the Governor of Assam approved the doctors’ voluntary retirement, with six citing medical reasons and the remaining 33 handing in their resignations. Seven come from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), eleven from Assam Medical College and Hospital, ten from Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, one from Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, six from Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, and four from Barpeta’s Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College.
While some have questioned why so many senior medical professionals are leaving government service at the same time, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta clarified that most of the doctors had applied for the retirement scheme much earlier.
“In the span of seven years, 39 doctors have applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). Most doctors work in private while still employed by the government, and when it is discovered, they apply for VRS. They have devoted their legal service to the State for the past 20 years or more, and we have found no irregularities in their voluntary and legal departure “According to the Minister.
While 39 doctors have chosen to leave, the State has recently appointed around 300 doctors, according to Mahanta.
Abhijit Sarma, the Superintendent of GMCH, clarified that most of the doctors had already submitted their papers and that their presence or absence does not affect the hospitals’ balance.
