The Manipur Governor on Tuesday fixed 9 am of March 24 as the date and time for holding election to the office of the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Following the announcement of the election date, an order issued by the secretariat of the Manipur Legislative Assembly requested all its members to attend the Assembly at 9 am on the said date at the Assembly Hall, Imphal for the aforefaid purpose.

The last date for submission of notice of motion is 12 pm of March 23, it mentioned.

BJP’s S Rajen Singh is performing duties as the protem speaker.

BJP legislature party leader N Biren Singh was sworn in as the chief minister for the second term. The oath of office was administered by Manipur Governor La Ganesan at the Raj Bhawan in Imphal.

Further, four BJP MLAs – Th Biswajit Singh, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Govindas Konthoujam and Nemcha Kipgen – and Naga People’s Front (NPF) leader Awangbou Newmai were appointed as cabinet ministers.

Addressing the media after the oath-taking ceremony, Biren Singh said, “I will work day and night to uproot corruption from the state. Secondly, I will wipe out drug-related issues and also bring all the insurgent groups operating in the state to the negotiating table.”

Asked when the ministry would be expanded, Biren Singh said: “It will take place very soon.”

The chief minister also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and fellow MLAs for their decision to make him the leader of the BJP legislature party.
