I.N.D.I.A. MPs visit strife-torn Manipur; Hold crucial meeting with Guv

A delegation comprising 21 MPs from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), an opposition alliance, recently embarked on a two-day visit to the conflict-ridden state of Manipur. Their primary objective was to assess the ground situation and offer solidarity to those affected by the three-month-long ethnic riots in the region. The visit involved interactions with residents and a crucial meeting with Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhawan on July 30.

The opposition MPs, representing INDIA, devoted their time to understanding the plight of those displaced by the recent turmoil. Visiting relief camps in the violence-hit areas allowed them to witness firsthand the challenges faced by the affected communities during these testing times.

Highlighting the significance of their visit, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who led the delegation, emphasized their intention to compile their observations into a comprehensive memorandum. This memorandum will accurately reflect the ground reality and the issues encountered by the people of Manipur due to the recent ethnic clashes. The intention is to submit this memorandum to Governor Anusuiya Uikey, thereby raising awareness and urging for appropriate measures to address the situation.

However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the opposition’s visit, dismissing it as mere “photo sessions” and “political tourism.” This criticism has raised concerns about the potential polarization of the situation and highlights the urgent need for collective efforts in restoring peace and harmony in Manipur.

The unrest in Manipur was triggered on May 3, following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

As the situation remains sensitive, it is crucial for all stakeholders to approach the matter with empathy, understanding, and a genuine commitment to resolving the root causes of the conflict. By uniting efforts, it is hoped that lasting peace can be achieved for the benefit of the people of Manipur.
