Manipur : Death sentence to Irom Chaoren Singh; 2010 rape-murder culprit

A death sentence was ordered to the 2010 rape and murder case convict, Irom Chaoren Singh by the Session Court of Thoubal district in Manipur on Wednesday. The accused is 40 years old who is son of I Biren, a resident of Thoubal Leishangthem Khong Manung area in Manipur. Irom allegedly raped and murdered his three-month pregnant wife in June 2010. Her body was recovered from Imphal River near Chongtham Kona Litan Makhong in Imphal East district on June 27, 2010.

The Special Judge Noutuneshwari Devi ordered a death sentence to Irom Chaoren Singh on Wednesday stating that, “Irom Chaoren Singh is sentenced to death with a fine of Rs 50,000 only and the convict shall be hanged to death”.

The decision of the Session Court of Thoubal district was highly applauded by the Women Action for Development (WAD), even though the judgement took a decade.

According to a statement by WAD, from 2010 to November 30, 2020, there are a total number of 511 pending cases of crime against women (only reported) and they are: Murder- 173, Suicide 150, Suspicious death- 107, Rape and murder- 32, Delivery death-30, Burnt to death-11,and Death on medical negligence- 8.

The court was requested to deliver justice to all the 511 cases at the earliest.
