Manipur : JAC opposes Mapithel Dam construction

A bandh has been called along the Imphal-Ukhrul road from December 7 to 10 by a Joint Action Force expressing disapproval against government’s lack of action and repeating its opposition for the construction of Mapithel dam on Thoubal river.

So far, no actions were initiated even after several meetings were held with the concerned authority regarding the economic livelihood rehabilitation package and RR programme by the committee.

Hench a bandh was decided to be called by the committee, protesting against the “irresponsible act” of the state government if the concerned authority fails to meet their demands before 5th of December.

The Thoubal River Valley Multipurpose project now known as the Mapithel Dam, is among the biggest dam projects in Northeast India with dimensions as long as 66 meter high and 1,034 meter in length.

With an aim to irrigate 21,000 hectares of cultivable land by utilizing the water resource of the Yangwui Kong, the development of the dam began in 1990 in the Mapithel area in Phungyar subdivision.

An estimate of 10 million gallons of drinking water and 7.5 MW of power supply was aimed through the project.
