Manipur: Smuggled goods worth over Rs 4 crore seized at Indo-Myanmar border

Security forces in Manipur have seized smuggled goods worth over Rs 4 crore from two separate operations along the Indo-Myanmar border.

As per the official report, the seizure was made following operations carried out by Chandel and Tengnoupal Battalions of 26 Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR. The operation was carried out on April 26 after it foiled the smuggling of illegal goods from the two districts.

The Official stated that, ‘In a first instance, troops of Chandel Battalion intercepted five vehicles and seven individuals near Angbreshu and New Songyang in Chandel district and upon thorough checking, illegally smuggled goods worth Rs 1.36 crore were recovered from the smugglers. Moreover, the troops of the Tengnoupal Battalion also intercepted two individuals in the jungle near Tengnoupal, however, the arrested smugglers escaped from the site.’

During a thorough check, the team recovered imported cigarettes, textiles and footwear worth Rs 3.26 crore from the site. The recovered items, along with the arrested individuals and vehicles were handed over to the Chandel Police Station and forest and customs departments for further investigation, later it added.
