Meghalaya : 100 million years old dinosaur fossil discovery in state

Researchers discovered nearly 100 million years old Dinosaur fossil in Meghalaya.

The discovered fossil bone in the West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya were of Sauropod Dinosaurs as recognized by researchers.

Researchers of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) made the discovery during a field trip.

For the first time, remnants of Sauropods of probable Titanosaurian origin have been discovered in the Northeastern state of Meghalaya. Sauropod bones having titanosaurian affinity have been discovered only in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

The bone fragments were collected from poorly sorted and greenish arkosic sandstone that was interlaid with pebbly beds. During the discovery over 25 disarticulated and fragmentary bone specimens were recovered.

Sauropods had long necks, long tails, small heads, and four thick pillar-like legs. They are of enormous sizes and were among the largest to have ever lived on land.
