Meghalaya: 11-hour curfew relaxation today

As Shillong slowly returns to normality, the state administration has decided to lift the city’s curfew from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

After evaluating the state’s law and order situation on Tuesday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed journalists that the situation in Shillong is slightly calmer than it was 24-48 hours ago.

The administration has been engaging and addressing the need of restoring peace with many stakeholders, including Rangbah Shnong, religious leaders, senior people, and organizations.

Sangma stated that no significant events have been recorded in the previous 24 hours and that the administration is trying to restore normalcy to the city and state.

“We are quite certain that normalcy will return soon,” the CM said.

Sangma reiterated that a court investigation into the death of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew had been ordered and that mobile internet/data services will be restored at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

So yet, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
When asked if he will accept the resignation of Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Sangma stated that no decision has been taken and that he is reviewing the situation.

“Let the situation calm down further and we will take a call on the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo said on Tuesday that curfew will be eased from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and all stores selling necessary goods will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All state and central government offices, banks, educational institution offices, and private offices that have previously acquired authorization will be permitted to function at 30% capacity and must close by 3 p.m. sharp. Vehicle inter-and intra-district travel will be authorized only with proper passes.

The order also said that public gatherings, meetings, rallies are not permitted.
Shops in all zones in Shillong dealing in essential commodities as notified by the Incident Commanders under each Zone in Shillong Urban Agglomeration will open from Wednesday till Saturday as per the time mentioned.
Only 50% of non-essential shops will be permitted to open each day and will be regulated by the incident commander in consultation with the Community COVID Management Team.
