Meghalaya : CM Conrad Sangma seeks financial help; approaches centre

To help the state to curb financial crisis, the central government was requested by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma to release the state’s share from central taxes.

The financial situation of the state has worsen after the delay in release of the share from central taxes.

With a deficit of Rs 727 crores, Meghalaya received a share of Rs 2,273 crores from the budget estimate of around Rs 3,000 crore, from April to October this year.

Meghalaya chief secretary, M S Rao said, “Overall, the financial position is not good, because we depend mainly on the share from central taxes. For a state like ours, the shortfall of Rs 727 crores is very big”.

“We hope Meghalaya’s share would be better in the last three months of the current financial year,” Rao added.

He said that the government employee salaries will not be affected because of the financial problem of the state.

“We will pay the salary of employees, but for arrears, it is not possible so soon,” he concluded.
