The submission of final report is delayed by the High-Level Committee (HLC) on Harijan Colony to the state government, which was publicly denounced by the Opposition Congress.

Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “This whole thing has taken so long that even the public are questioning, not just the legislators”.

She said, questions will be made if the matter does not proceed till the next Assembly session.

“Nobody can get away with it,” she added.

The route between Bimola and Mawlonghat continued to be a no-entry zone, pointed Lyngdoh.

“We intended to ask questions during the autumn session (of the House) but we had three or four days of debating time because of the pandemic situation and we had to bring in the no-confidence motion too,” she said.

The opposition members cannot be held accountable on politicizing an issue by raising questions. The government cannot neglect their responsibilities, said Lyngdoh.

Stating cautiously of an unstable Budget session she said, “We are asking for an update because you (government) said you will do it”.

With the motive of relocating the Harijan Colony settlers, the HLC was set up by the Meghalaya government two years ago. The panel has not submitted its proposal to the government till now.

In June 2018, the requirement for resettlement gained pace after an argument in the colony turned into a violent agitation hampering life in the area for days.

The residents of the colony still continue to reside under 24-hour police monitoring.
