Meghalaya : Kiren Rijiju speaks on ILP demand

Warning in opposition to the demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP), Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju said that it will damage the region’s impression in front of the other states.

The Centre is aware of the necessities of the Northeastern people, he said.

Rijiju indicating the ILP said, “The Northeast is a beautiful place and we don’t want any untoward incident to happen as it will damage the region’s image”.

Rijiju stated that the Narendra Modi government is pushing hard for the development of the Northeast.

He stated that ILP is a “political decision”. Adding to it he said, “The Central government is very sensitive to the needs of northeasterners and the protection of their ethnicity and identity. The PM is doing everything possible to protect the region’s indigenous languages, cultures traditions etc.”

Rijiju said, “We have to harmonize the entire nation and promote local cultures but peace is a prerequisite everywhere.”

Even though a resolution was passed unanimously by the state Assembly on December 19, 2019 demanding the implementation of ILP, the Centre has not given any positive respond against it which has raised agitation in the state by various pressure groups and political parties.
