In the city, the price of petrol has already surpassed Rs 100. On July 17, it was sold for Rs 100.4.

The state government charges 20% or Rs 15 per litre, whichever is greater, for petrol and 12% or Rs 9 per litre, whichever is higher, for diesel.

Previously, the government levied a 31 percent tax on each litre of petrol. It was 22.5 percent when compared to diesel.

Before two months, the price of petrol in Shillong was Rs 89 per litre, while diesel was Rs 83. The rising fuel prices are causing worry among cab drivers.

Chairman of the Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles (MJACCV), Wandonbok Jyrwa pushed on price reductions for the benefit of everybody.

He stated that the committee would meet shortly to examine the subject, but that no decision on raising taxi charges has been made. He asked the administration to lower the taxes.
