The issue of implementing Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state was raised by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in a recently held meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
Union Minister however gave no assurance in implementing the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation, 1873 in the state.
Sangma said, “He (Amit Shah) has stated he will examine the entire aspect”. The resolution is still being examined as it will affect other states also.
“The Government is taking a call based on the overall impact on the region and other States if they implement ILP,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister repeatedly made demands for the implementation of the ILP in a letter which was submitted to the Union Home Minister. He urged the Ministry to consider the resolution.
Affirming the situation Sangma said, “We will continuously follow up this issue regularly so that the demand can be achieved”.
“What is good in the entire situation is that the entry and exit points are being set up. The Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act, 2016 or MRSSA already has provisions to set up entry and exit points. So a large part of it is already incorporated in the old act,” he said.
Sangma said, “The entry and exit points are being set up, and the registration will take place. The process of registration is already happening because of the COVID-19 situation. The ultimate point to remember is that the goal should be achieved, and the aim is to ensure we can monitor the entry and exit of people in the state”.
