Meghalaya : Umling entry point opens from Dec 16

Entry of outsiders to the Meghalaya will be restricted as the state gets ready for launching its first entry and exit point along the national highway at Umling on December 16.The honours will be done by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma.

Sangma said, “The Umling entry point will be inaugurated on December 16 as we are going to resume tourism from December 21 so it will be activated by then.”

The entry-exit point will work as official station for checking identities of people who desires to enter the state. The process is imagined as a defensive wall for unauthorized entry of “outsiders”, in view of centre’s delay in implementing ILP.

Personal identity and documents as evidence, needs to be submitted before entry into the state, according to official sources. Valid passport, EPIC, Aadhar card needs to be submitted by all local inhabitants as well. Via an official app, the tourists need to pre-register their purpose of visit on-line. Essential services are free from any obligations.

Khasi Students’ Union president, Lambokstar Marngar said, “Only entry points in Umling are not enough. We need entry points in other areas of Khasi and Jaintia and Garo region also”.

The KSU president said, “We have already requested the government that all these entry and exit points that have already been identified as part of the MRSSA should be fast-tracked like in Umling”, indicating the 18 identified locations in the different parts of the Khasi and Jaintia region and Garo Hills.

He added, “Let the government inaugurate on December 16, we will see how it will operate. We will watch and after that we will comment based on this.”

“All this entry point should be completed then we will see how this mechanism works,” he said.
