Price of petrol rises almost reaching Rs 100 in Shillong

Assam: State Govt reduces VAT on Petrol & Diesel Prices

In Shillong, the price of petrol has almost reached a century, while the price of diesel is in the low nineties.

On Monday, a liter of fuel and diesel cost Rs 99.45 and Rs 91.94 in the city, respectively.

Meanwhile, the price of extra premium petrol was Rs 103.50 a liter.

Sanchet Sureka, secretary of the Petrol Dealers’ Association of Meghalaya, noted that petrol costs had begun to fall but had recently risen due to an increase in foreign market prices.

However, owing to a reduced tax rate, Meghalaya has among the lowest costs in the country. The state government imposes taxes that account for 20% of the price of petrol and 12% of the price of diesel.

The increase in fuel prices has impacted commercial vehicle operators hard, and vehicle owners have begun preparing for local mobility.

Drivers in Shillong reported that rising petrol prices, housing rent, and children’s schooling had put them under a lot of stress, especially because cabbies are only allowed to work three times a week.

They continue to operate their cars on an odd-even schedule, while all other vehicles are permitted to operate on a daily basis.

In addition, they stated that they are currently charging Rs 30 per person from Jhalupara to Police Bazar, and are only entitled to transport three people.

According to a tourist cab driver who runs between Shillong and Guwahati, they charge Rs 600 per passenger one trip, and the situation is becoming more difficult for them as petrol and diesel prices rise.
