Rakesh Sangma, the chief executive member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), has resigned in a major development in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region.
Rakesh Sangma handed in his resignation letter to Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on Sunday night.
However, Albinush Marak of the Siju MDC has been chosen as the new CEM leader. The decision was reached at an MDC meeting on Saturday, as Rakesh Sangma gears up to resign.
Meanwhile, there had been widespread protests in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills districts, calling for Rakesh Sangma’s removal as GHADC CEM.
Moreover, protesters in Garo Hills have demanded that newly-elected CEM Rakesh Sangma be removed from office, claiming that his identity as an indigenous Garo is in question.
Over the last few weeks, Garo Hills-based pressure groups have been protesting Rakesh Sangma’s appointment as GHADC’s CEM.
Meanwhile, while returning from the Damalgre Rerapara block building in Ampati, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was greeted with black flags and ‘go back’ slogans.
Furthermore, GSU, FKJGP, ADE, FAF, AYWO, and NESO, Garo Hills-based NGOs, had objected to MDC Rakesh ‘Newar’ Sangma’s appointment as CEM, claiming that Rakesh and his siblings have always been identified as ‘Newar’ (of Nepali origin) and not ‘Sangma’ since school days. In college, this was changed to Newar Sangma.
