The Assam Rifles troops stationed in Mizoram’s Champhai district recovered illegal areca nuts worth Rs 24.96 lakh, marking yet another victory in their crusade against smuggling.

The Serchhip Battalion of HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles led the joint operation, which was overseen by HQ Inspector General Assam Rifles (East).

8 Assam Rifles, 2 Assam Rifles, 10 Assam Rifles, 11 Assam Rifles, and representatives from Champhai’s customs department on specific information made up the joint operation team.

“The estimated cost of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 24,96,000,” the HQ IGAR said in a statement (East).

The contraband items discovered on Saturday were seized by Champhai’s customs department for further legal action.

“Ongoing areca nut smuggling is a major source of concern for the state of Mizoram, particularly along the India-Myanmar border,” according to an Assam Rifles statement.

“The Assam Rifles, aptly dubbed the ‘Sentinels of the Northeast,’ have maintained their efforts against smuggling activities in Mizoram,” the statement continued. The districts’ customs department has seized the contraband items recovered on Saturday for legal proceedings.

It added, “Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’ have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram”.
