The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd has written to the Centre pleading with it to stop arecanut from Myanmar entering the country illegally through Mizoram.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Campco president Kishore Kumar Kodgi stated that there is widespread arecanut smuggling from Myanmar through Mizoram’s Champhai and Lawngtlai districts, which border Myanmar’s Chin state.
Smugglers on the Indian side of the border in Mizoram, he said, are building a number of illegal roads.
In the Champhai district alone, it is estimated that there are around 40 illegal smuggling routes.
Smugglers, according to Kodgi, use a variety of methods to transport their goods, including taking a detour to avoid the last Central Excise and Customs duty post at Selin Village on the Saitual Tualbung – Khanpui – Tipaimukh – Aizawl Road.
According to Campco, the smuggled arecanut is subjected to a 5% GST levy despite the fact that there isn’t a single drying or processing unit in Mizoram to justify the tax. In both districts, there are very few arecanut plantations.
The Union government must take immediate corrective action by nullifying the various measures taken to validate the smuggled arecanut through the Indo-Myanmar border in violation of rules and regulations, as well as maintaining strict border vigilance, he said.
According to Kodgi, a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister by Vanramchhuangi, a Mizoram social and environmental activist, highlighted the smuggling of dried arecanut from foreign countries into India via Mizoram’s Indo-Myanmar border.
Campco, he said, has verified the marketing situation in Mizoram and supports the contents of Vanramchhuangi’s memorandum to the Prime Minister.
Such illegal arecanut entry into India through the country’s North-Eastern region could have an impact on the domestic arecanut farming community, he said, pleading with the authorities to take immediate action.
