The ruling party, Mizo National Front (MNF) wins Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) polls on Tuesday.
After counting, the state election commission announced that MNF won the LADC polls by Twenty seats, which fielded candidates in all the 25 seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress won one seat each. One was supported by Congress out of the total three elected candidates. Ten people out of the Twenty-two sitting members who contested the polls retained their seats that included the incumbent Chief Executive Member (CEM) T. Zakunga of BJP and the sitting council chairman V. Zirsanga of MNF.
Among the twenty-five elected members, there are twelve new faces and three former members. By a margin of 163 votes, T. Zakunga defeated his rival N.Ngunhenga of the MNF.
At least 72 candidates, including sixteen independent, competed for the LADC polls held on December 4. Including 26,104 female voters, a total of 85.09% of votes were polled out of 51,456 voters.
MNF had the highest members at 11, followed by BJP, which had nine members and the Congress had only five members before elections. The LADC has twenty-five elected members and two nominated members, under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution created in 1972. The council headquarters is in Lawngtlai in the southern part of Mizoram, bordering Myanmar.
