The polls for 25- member Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) in Mizoam’s Lawngtlai district ended without any problem.
85 per cent voters turned up in the polls on Friday.
Including 26,104 females, the LACD has a total of 51,456 voters.
Polling in all the 111 polling stations was conducted nicely, according to Mizoram State Election Commission Secretary, Teresy Vanlalhruaii.
Polling began at 7 am and ended at 4 pm, she said.
During the polling, social distancing and other Covid-19 protocols were strictly followed.
72 candidates were competing for 25 seats in the LACD.
The polls were between the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the BJP which fielded candidates in 17 seats.
Congress fielded its candidates in 14 seats. There were 16 independent candidates.
MNF does not work with the BJP in Mizoram even being a part of the BJP led NDA government in the centre.
On 8th of December the counting of the votes will be done.
MNF has 11 members, followed by BJP and Congress with 9 and 5 respectively.
Set up of a government in the LACD is being planned after the polls, said State BJP president Vanlalhmuaka.
He said the saffron party has fielded only 17 seats, out of remaining eight; it has the support of seven independent candidates.
Direct funds from the Centre along with more powers will be given to the three autonomous district councils (ADCs) by amending the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, if the BJP is voted to power, said Kiren Rijiju, the Senior BJP leader and Union Sports Minister, during an election campaign.
The LADC, Mara Autonomous District Council and Chakma Autonomous District Council were established in 1972.
