Mizoram : Railways in Aizawl by 2023 Mizoram

An official of Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) informed that in the next two years the construction of the 51.38-km long broad gauge railway line between Sairang and Bairabi on the Mizoram–Assam border will be completed that will connect Mizoram’s capital Aizawl to the railway map of India.

Sairang is around 20 kms away from Aizawl and 12 km far from the Lengpui airport.

The official informed that almost all tenders have been finalized and 89.55 per cent of earthwork, 37 per cent of major bridges and about 73.26 per cent of minor bridges have been completed including 21 per cent of the construction of cut and cover tunnels.

The railway line will cross four stations- Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang.

The railway officials interacted with Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo on Friday during his visit to the construction site of the BG line.

Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone of the Sairang-Bairabi broad gauge line in November 2014. The project began from 2015 and was expected to be completed by the year 2018.

Due to several obstacles, the project could not be accomplished in time. Problems like hilly terrain, deep valleys and gorges, frequent landslides, short duration of working season due to monsoon and lack of labour and construction materials in the state consumed more time than was expected.
