Mizoram weightlifter to compete for Tokyo Olympics

18 year old Jeremy Lalrinnunga from Aizawl, Mizoram is trying his luck in 67-kg division of weightlifting at the ongoing IWF Junior Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to make his way for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

The Aizawl weightlifter has many medals along with national and international records.

Lalrinnunga ranks 16th in the World Rankings at present and he will need to lift at least 310 kg to qualifying for the Tokyo Games. His personal best currently stands at 306-kg – 140-kg snatch and 166-kg clean and jerk.

The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) is supporting his dream for a place at the Tokyo Olympics.

Lalrinnunga was formally admitted into the scheme on November 14, 2018 and has received a total financial support of Rs 30.14 lakhs from TOPS for equipment, training, competition support and Out of Pocket Allowance (OPA).

He was also a Khelo India Athlete.

Lalrinnunga’s gave India its first gold medal in the Youth Olympics Games by winning at the Summer Youth Olympics of 2018.
