Nagaland government given ‘Shamator’ Sub-Division district status

committed

In a recent development in Nagaland’s northeastern state, the Shamator subdivision has been given approval to become a district in the future.

Following a series of peaceful protests by residents of the Shamator subdivision, the Nagaland government made the major decision to upgrade the subdivision to a full-fledged district.

In addition to granting Shamator districthood, the state government also decided to recognise the Tikhir tribe, a Nagaland scheduled tribe.

The Nagaland government had formed three new districts, Chumukedima, Niuland, and Tseminyu, on the 18th of December last year. While granting district status to these locations, Nagaland’s governing body also reached an agreement in light of the district’s grating position to the Shamator subdivision.

However, the government of Nagaland has attached a condition to the transformation of Shamator into a district: the full upgrade of Shamator into a district will be possible only if the two communities living in the same locality, Tikhir and Yimkhiung, share a bond of unity.

The Shamator sub-division will be elevated to the status of a district if people from these two communities can come together and work out their differences.

Since 3 January 2022, a massive protest led by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council has been taking place in the state over the demand that the Shamator region be given district status. The YTC (Yimkhiung Tribal Council) is the Yimkhiung community’s governing body in Nagaland.

On Friday, January 14th, in the presence of Chief Minister Rio, the Nagaland government decided to form a third party to interact with tribal bodies in Shamator and resolve their differences.

S Tsuyihba, the general secretary of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council, stated that the protest rallies had been halted for the time being due to a cabinet decision, but that they would continue to press the government to make Shamator a district by January 26.
