Mass Public March against imposition of AFSPA scheduled for January 10

A mass public march against the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been scheduled for January 10 in response to the Union Home Ministry’s notification declaring Nagaland as a “disturbed area” for another six months with effect from December 30.

Kevitho Kera, one of the organisers, told Nagaland Post that citizens would gather at 4th Mile junction at 6 a.m. on that day and march all the way to Kohima, where they would submit a memorandum opposing the Act to Nagaland governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi.

He stated that the participants would spend the night in Piphema before beginning the march to the State Capital the next morning.

Kera clarified that the planned march was not organised by any political party or organisation, and that the public has had enough of false promises. “The public will now lead the peace movement,” he said.

When asked about the public response so far, Kera stated that they have received support from a large number of people who have confirmed their participation, as well as students from a theological college who will be attending the march.

Kera appealed to all right-thinking citizens, regardless of tribes, communities, or political affiliations, to join the march, stating that he expects a large number of youth to participate.

When asked if the march would be cancelled if the newly formed committee to repeal AFSPA only announced a partial repeal, Kera stated that the public would not be satisfied with a partial repeal and demanded its complete repeal. He promised that the march would be peaceful and “apolitical,” with the public leading the charge against AFSPA.
