OSU outraged by Prime Minister’s silence on December 4 and 5 killings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over the killing of 14 innocent Konyak civilians on December 4 and 5, 2021 has angered the Oting Students’ Union (OSU).

While expressing condolences to the families of the 12 people killed in a stampede at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu & Kashmir on behalf of the Oting victims, the union questioned why the Prime Minister was so adamant or hesitant to send a simple message of sympathy and condolences when 14 innocent Konyak youth were slaughtered.

In a statement, OSU president Keatwang Konyak questioned whether India was not a secular state, and whether Konyaks were not Indian citizens in Modi’s eyes. OSU claimed that a few words of consolation from the Prime Minister would have brought them great comfort.

When the victims’ families were hoping for justice and placing all their hopes in the ongoing investigation, OSU said they were shocked when the locals were labelled as non-cooperative by the Indian Army’s court of inquiry team.

According to the union, OSU received no official notification other than a request from Superintendent of Police (SP) Mon seeking permission for the army inquiry team’s visit to ground zero.

According to OSU, despite their “non-cooperation” with the Indian armed forces, the Konyak civil society organisations (CSOs) granted permission for the inquiry team to visit the site and discover the truth, on the condition that they do so without arms or uniform. Despite the pain they had suffered, the people of Oting had complied with the request with the utmost respect, according to OSU.

OSU, on the other hand, said they learned that the investigation team had reportedly refused to speak with or listen to other witnesses at ground zero. The team only interacted with and recorded the statements of BJP Mon district president Nyawang Konyak and CHM Lenwang Konyak on December 29, 2021, according to the union.

Clarification is required: In response to a report published by the Press Trust of India (PTI) on December 30, 2021, claiming that locals had refused to cooperate with the inquiry team, OSU described the report as completely false and misleading.

According to OSU, such “malicious venom” was intended to make victims’ family members’ hopes for justice a distant dream.

OSU claimed the report was a distortion of the truth and completely uncalled for, and that it had perplexed the world, and demanded a correction from the news agency by January 10, 2022.

OSU declared that the news agency would be held solely responsible in the event of any untoward situation.

The union also asked the inquiry team to speak with and record the statements of two survivors of the December 4 massacre who were transferred back to Mon from Dibrugarh Medical College & Hospital, as well as the statement of ex-army man Chongmoi Konyak who was injured, interact with doctors from DHM who conducted the post mortem on December 5, investigate the Mon district administration and law enforcement authority, and, if necessary, interact with and investigate Konyak CSOs.

OSU also urged the state government to consider not only the dead and injured, but also the survivors of the Oting massacre, who would be forced to live with disabilities for the rest of their lives.
