On Thursday, the continuing agitation headed by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) demanding the quick recognition of Shamator as a district began its fourth day. All government offices, stores, and business enterprises remained closed in Pungro, Kiphire district, and Shamator and Chessore, Tuensang district.
Visitors were still barred from entering Mt Saramati, Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Mimi and Salomi stone caves. Since January 4, the Likimro Hydroelectric Power Plant (LHPP) has been entirely shut down by YTC volunteers, and volunteers are camping at the site.
Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets, demanding that the Shamator district be declared immediately. Protesters dressed in traditional garb marched around towns waving placards and shouting slogans.
Brief programmes were held in Pungro, Shamator, and Chessore, where speakers restated their demand for Shamator district and made a strong appeal to the State government to fulfil Yimkhiungs’ long-standing desire to live in one undivided Yimkhiung district, namely Shamator.
Meanwhile, Yimkhiung women will lead Day-5 of the agitation beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday at Shamator, Pungro, and Chessore under the auspices of the Yimkhiung Women Organisation (YWO).
All Yimkhiung residents, young and old, have been asked to gather in traditional garb at the respective town centres. YTC mentioned this in a press statement.
Western Yimkhiung Hoho (WYH), on the other side, has urged the State government to accept the Yimkhiung community’s desire to live under a single compact administrative centre.
The hoho stated in a statement that the demand for Shamator district, which was started by Yimkhiung Tribal Council, was inclusive of all villages under its umbrella for administrative convenience based on “tribal line.”
WYH encouraged the government to provide the Yimkhiung community the ability to choose and choose their own administrative headquarters, as well as to provide citizens with justice.
