Sikkim: FPO starts Buying Fresh Vegetables from Farmer’s Doorstep

The Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) have started obtaining homely grown vegetable produce from the farmers’ doorstep for onward supply and marketing in local markets.

FPO Khechuperi today obtained more than 98 quintals from Tingting village in Yuksam, West Sikkim.

Incentives are provided to the farmers for their produce from the State Agriculture and Horticulture departments after procurement of the produce by FPOs.

Only those farmers who sell their produce through FPOs will be eligible for the government’s Production Incentive Scheme for select crops.

Local FPO president Tenzing Gyatso Bhutia, along with his team toured every village and obtained agricultural produce from the doors of farmers. He said that an incentive of Rs. 20 per kg is paid for ginger.

He stated that the FPO buys produce from farmers at a good price and without any extra expense at the comfort of their own village.

“This initiative of FPR in an encouraging for us. In the past, we have faced troubles on marketing of the products,” B.B. Basnet, a progressive farmer from Tingting village said.

FPO is registered under the Central and State governments and attached with the Agriculture and Horticulture departments.

The incentives will be directly transferred to the farmer’s account.
