The Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Sikkim is organising the first Fish Mela in the State on 20th and 21st April at M.G. Marg, Gangtok.
In this regard, the Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Departments, Shri L.N. Sharma convened a Press Conference at the Conference Hall of Tashiling Secretariat to inform general people about the upcoming event.
The Minister stated that, ‘ The Directorate of Fisheries is organising the first two days Fish Mela in the State at M.G. Marg Gangtok, duly maintaining COVID 19 appropriate behavior. The local fish farmers and entreprenuers will be displaying and selling varieties of cultured fish including ornamental and local indigenous fish in the Mela.’
The purpose of organising the Fish Mela is to encourage the youth to take up fisheries as an entrepreneurship, with the objective to promote fish farming and also to meet up growing demands of fish in the State, later he added. He also appealed the youth and progressive farming community to participate in the event and avail the knowledge, inputs and technicalities on fish farming being provided by the experts.
He also added that the vision of State Government to transform Sikkim into a sustainable and self sufficient State will only be achieved if the people have focus and determination in their respective fields and also urged the farming community to take pride in this profession.
The Minister also informed that under the ambitious programme of Pradhan Mantri Matshya Sampada Yojana, the Directorate of Fisheries aims at encouraging educated unemployed youth for taking up fish farming in order to generate employment.
