Sikkim: CM P.S. Golay inaugurates Gangtok Municipal Corporation's indoor sports facility

P.S. Golay, the Chief Minister of Sikkim, inaugurated the Gangtok Municipal Corporation’s indoor sports facility on Wednesday (GMC). The 30,410-square-foot sport arena atop the GMC building in Deorali features an international-standard futsal court, as well as a gym, yoga hall, cricket practise pitch, table tennis court, and other amenities.

In his remarks, the Chief Minister congratulated the GMC Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors, and all GMC authorities and workers on the project’s completion. He also expressed gratitude to the former GMC Mayor, councillors, and authorities for laying the groundwork for the sports complex.

Golay stated that the State administration has been carrying out various initiatives and programmes for the benefit and welfare of Sikkim’s people.

“In two and a half year of governance we have been able to do a lot in health sector. We developed dialysis centres, updated hospitals and recruited the best doctors for the convenience to the Sikkimese citizens. The State today is in the top position in regard to Covid vaccination. 100% of the population have received the first dose whereas the second dose is being administered smoothly. We are able to be on top position only because of the support met from the Central government,” said Golay.

The opening of Bhaichung Stadium in Namchi, which was postponed for the second time last week, will take place on October 31, according to the Chief Minister. Governor Ganga Prasad will lay the foundation stone for the stadium, which will be named after former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia.

Golay mentioned in his speech that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit Sikkim in November to lay the foundation stone for Kanchenjunga State University. We’re also doing everything we can to get the grandiose ‘AMA’ project out of the Union Home Minister’s hands, Golay remarked.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister toured the sports venue. The Gangtok Municipal Corporation also awarded him with a souvenir. The Chief Minister was also honoured by the football clubs of Sikkim, who gave him with a lifetime membership in Aakraman FC as well as a club jersey.

The Chief Minister handed over the keys to Aakraman FC, which had won the tender to operate the sports venue. Earlier in the programme, Arun Upreti, the Minister of Urban Development, and Nell Bahadur Chettri, the Mayor, spoke.

Gary Chopel, Gangtok Municipal Corporation’s extra chief town planner, delivered a detailed technical study on the indoor sports arena. All of the officials, engineers, and contractors involved in the project received commendation certificates. M/s Manokaamna Enterprises was in charge of the civil works for the Rs. 9.3 crore project.
