Sikkim: Late Gnawang Youngda Lepcha memorial archery tournament begins

At Tathangchen archery field here, the 2nd Late Gnawang Youngda Lepcha Compound Archery Memorial Cup began today. Teams from all around the state are competing in the 15-day knockout competition organised by the Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club (SHSC) in remembrance of late archer Gnawang Youngda Lepcha.

Sichey Mavericks defeated Denzong Boys 59-32 in the first match. The historical significance of archery in Sikkim was underscored by chief guest Karma Tashi Bhutia, head of the Sikkim Housing Development Board.

He stated that the State administration is aggressively striving to promote sports and athletes, encouraging young people to participate in sports.

Tenzing Lamtha, the founder of the SHSC, remembered Youngda Lepcha as a good sportsman, particularly in archery.

He competed in several State archery championships and was one of the most senior archers in the state, according to Lamtha.

“I would want to congratulate the organisers for hosting and promoting archery. To see SP Tenzing Loden Lepcha as a participant is a positive gesture. His sportsman spirit will encourage the youngsters to take up archery as a sport”, he said.

“We respect and honour his contributions in the field of archery. Also, our club aims in promoting both modern and traditional archery therefore we hosted this event in his loving memory,” added Lamtha.

“The tournament is going to be exciting and competitive as the participating teams are good including the guest teams. We appeal everyone to come, support and enjoy the tournament,” urged Lamtha.

Youngda Lepcha’s older brother, Dukgyal Lepcha, thanked SHSC for organising the event in his brother’s honour.
