SCERT’s Population Education Cell held a state-level theme-based role play and folk dance competition on Wednesday, according to a press release. In the role-play competition, Tadong senior secondary school, Passingdong SS, and Central Pendam’s Tika Lal Niroula SSS took first, second, and third place, respectively, while in the folk dance category, Darap SSS, Deythang SS, and Yuksom SSS took first, second, and third place, respectively. The schools that placed first in each category in the state competition will represent the state at the national level.
SCERT director Dr. Rabin Chhetri, joint directors, faculty members, and HoIs of SCERT, principals of DIET, trainees of DIET Gangtok, students and teachers from participating schools from four districts attended the program, which was chaired by Education Secretary Anil Raj Rai.
The competition drew a total of 12 schools from the district level competition in the above two categories, according to the press release.
The format of the show was slightly altered, with virtual screenings of theme-based folk dance and role-play followed by one-on-one interaction between the judges and the contestants. Some of the themes that were highlighted through role-plays and folk dances included substance abuse, safe use of gadgets and the internet, women empowerment, respect for elders, and environmental conservation.
Dr. Kuljan Lama, medical officer, School Health, Health department; Mingma Tshering Lepcha, artist, Culture department; and Anu Pradhan, artist, and choreographer were the judges for the competition.
Prakash Rai, peon of SCERT’s NPE Cell, was also honoured for his service to the department, as was Dr. Kuljan Lama, for his contributions to various Adolescence Education programs and activities.
Dr. Shanti Ram Adhikari gave a brief account of Prakash Rai’s contributions to the Population Education Cell since his appointment in 1984.
According to the release, the chief guest congratulated the participating teams and urged the participants and coordinators to work on improving the quality by relating it to the themes provided.
