The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has selected Sikkim Cricketer Ankur Malik for the U-19 Men’s Challenger Trophy, which begins on October 25 in Ahmedabad. The BCCI sent the confirmation to the Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) on Friday.
After Amos Rai in 2000, Ankur is the second player from Sikkim to be selected for the higher division of the domestic tournament.
Ankur, a promising right-handed opening batter and right-arm leg-spinner, recently represented Sikkim in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, scoring 205 runs at 51.25 and taking 16 wickets at 4.06.
Ankur, who has the best bowling figures in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy 2021-22, is the third-highest wicket-taker. In his 8.4 overs against Mizoram in the Plate Group match at Ranchi, he took 7/18. He’s also the only bowler to take two five-wicket hauls in his career.
The Sikkim Cricketer is in a respectable 21st place among batsmen. Ankur scored 205 runs in his four innings, including two half-centuries.
Dr. Atul Gaikwad, who has pioneered a new approach to youth development in Sikkim, said Ankur’s selection for the Challenger Trophy was inspirational for SICA and Sikkim cricketers. “The fruits you see in the form of Ankur’s and the Under-19 girls’ achievements are simply due to the hard work of our president, secretary, executive members, and everyone involved in Sikkim cricket,” says the president. They’ve already planted the seeds; now just wait a few years and you’ll see an IPL star and an India player from SICA.”
Dr. Atul, the director of cricket development and coaching at SICA, has led Sikkim to success in recent years. The Sikkim players are now being well-coached and have a desire to excel and win matches for the state, according to the SICA.
“Finally, we’re seeing the results of coaches’, trainers’, and physiotherapists’ consistent and constant guidance to improve the standard. SICA president Lobzang G. Tenzing said, “The SICA family is ecstatic with this season’s strong start.”
The BCCI’s six-team Challengers Trophy features top performers from the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The players will be evaluated for national team selection for the ICC U19 World Cup 2022 during the tournament.
