Sikkim: Former MLA Sukumar Pradhan passed away

Sukumar Pradhan, a former two-time MLA and veteran politician, died Friday morning at a private nursing home in Siliguri. From 1985 to 1994, he was the MLA of Central Pendam constituency for two consecutive terms under the Sikkim Sangram Parishad.

Later, Pradhan became a member of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and held various positions within the party. His wife and four daughters survive him. He was from East Sikkim’s Duga.

P.S. Golay, the Chief Minister, has expressed his condolences over Pradhan’s death.

“A seasoned politician, his contributions to politics and the welfare of the state will be remembered for a long time. In this hour of grief, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends, and I pray for the departed soul,” the Chief Minister said in his condolence message.

Former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has expressed his disbelief at Pradhan’s death. He described the day as “sad” because “we have lost a very good human being today.”

“I first met Sukumar Pradhan in 1985, when he was elected as an MLA for the first time. I learned he was a very good legislator and a thorough gentleman during my time with him in the 1980s. “He was a dedicated leader who did politics not for the sake of power or the chair, but for the sake of Sikkim and the Sikkimese people,” Chamling said.

The death of a good politician like SK Pradhan is a huge loss for Sikkim, and Chamling added that his place will never be filled by anyone else. He expressed his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family.

Pradhan’s death was also mourned by the SDF.

“In his public life, his contribution to the people and the party has been highly praised and tested by time and challenges. “His contributions, commitment, and sacrifices made during his life will be remembered and respected by the party and the people,” the SDF stated.

“The SDF party expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prays for eternal peace for the departed soul. “Prayers and two minutes of silence were also observed by members of the party present in the SDF head office in respect and memory of the deceased,” the SDF said in a condolence message.
