Sikkim's Old Land Laws Are Being Weakened By SKM Govt misusing 2018 Notification: SNS

The Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj (SNS) on Wednesday “strongly” condemned the “repeated attempts of the SKM government to weaken the old land laws of Sikkim by misusing illegal notification of 2018,” referring to a Land Revenue Department notification that, according to the SNS, is being used to transfer land and other immovable property of Sikkim’s original inhabitants to non-Sikkim Subjects and non-COI holders.

Despite the SNS’ repeated requests for the State government to withdraw the notification, the SKM government is “desperately trying to destroy the rights of Sikkimese people” by misusing the same notification, according to the SNS. As a result, the Sikkimey Nagarik Samaj demands that the Land Revenue Department stop bringing anti-Sikkimese proposals to cabinet meetings, and that the State government withdraw the illegal notification of 2018 in the interests of Sikkim and its people, according to the press release.

SNS has also expressed surprise at the awarding of higher education scholarships to trade licence holders who lack Sikkim Subject, CoI, or Residential Certificate.

“The Education Department should be aware that the Sikkim Subject/Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate is a requirement for obtaining a trade licence, and that any trade licence issued in Sikkim without these certificates is illegal.” As a result, awarding scholarships based on a trade licence is illegal and will have far-reaching consequences if it is not stopped now. Such illegal education department practises are detrimental to the interests of Sikkimese people and should be stopped immediately, according to the SNS.

The SNS has urged “right thinking” Sikkimese people to rise up and speak out to protect their constitutional rights, which are enshrined in Article 371F of India’s constitution, “before we become aliens in our own land.”
