Even after different political parties raised their objection, administrators were appointed by the Tripura Government to run twenty civic bodies in the state.
The civic bodies comprises of six nagar panchayats, 13 municipal councils and one municipal corporation. The tenure of most of them is scheduled to end in the next three days.
Several magistrates were given appointment letters by the state urban development, who probably were to take charge as administrators to these civic bodies from Thursday.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation will be handled by the district magistrate of West Tripura district, while sub-divisional magistrates will work as administrators of other civic bodies in the state.
Stating Covid-19 pandemic, elections to the civic bodies were postponed by the state election authority till February 27, 2021.
CPIM leader, Pabitra Kar said, “The government’s decision to appoint administrators to civic bodies is an undemocratic and autocratic one.”
“Different states are conducting elections from the panchayat to assembly level, but in Tripura the BJP is avoiding elections as they are losing their base here,” he said.
The appointment of administrators in the autonomous council was opposed by different political parties which includes the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura, an ally of the ruling BJP in Tripura.
Administrators, whose tenure was supposed to be expired by May 17 was appointed by the state government to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The Government have extended the tenure of the administrators by another six months.
