The Tripura High Court denied a petition seeking the dismissal of FIRs filed against senior CPI-M politician and former state minister Bhanulal Saha. FIRs were lodged against Saha in connection with social media posts in which he reportedly encouraged Tripura youngsters to pick up ‘arms.’
The former Tripura minister allegedly instructed the state’s youth to gather sticks, machetes, and iron rods for “self-defense” against supposed political attacks.
In a Facebook post in May, Saha said, “Keep sticks, da, iron pipes, etc. Regardless of gender, males, youth, or age, there will be mass opposition in every house for their bricks, kicks, and petrol bombs. It is not a criminal to pick up objects for self-defense.
“Be courageous in your opposition to the ruling party’s goons.” Notably, Saha was a finance minister in Tripura’s previous Manik Sarkar-led Left administration.
The Tripura High Court order read: “…quashing of FIR on the ground that the statement made is ‘stand-alone’ cannot be accepted since the posting on Facebook during the above period made by the persons from the said political party, needs a serious examination.”
