The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has increased its agitation over their demand for a separate ‘Tipraland’ State.
IPFT started from Golaghati in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) area and on Friday entered Dhanpur area of Sepahijala district.
The IPFT rally entered its fifth day on Friday and said “will cover every area falling under the TTAADC”.
IPFT spokesman Shukla Charan Noatia said, “As the rally continues to cross a new area every day, people joining us in our demand for a separate ‘Tipraland’”.
The State Government was directed by the Tripura High Court to conduct elections to the TTAADC before May 17.
The previous TTAADC Government term ended on May 17, 2020. But due to COVID-19 pandemic, elections to the Council could not be held.
Tripura Governor took over the TTAADC administration for six months, and later extended for another six months on November 17.
The opposition parties in the State heavily criticized the delay of TTAADC elections.
A Council of 30 members governs the TTAACD.
Out of 30 members, 28 are elected through adult suffrage, while 2 are nominated by the Governor.
Out of 28 elected seats, 25 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes.
Notably, areas falling under TTAADC hold strong support of the CPI-M.
The TTAADC is being ruled by the CPI-M alone for the past 15 years.
Preparations for the elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) have already started.
