Tripura : Law on pre-marriage religious conversions

On demand of a law to stop using marriage to force someone to change religion, a National Highway in Tripura Gomati district was blocked by activists of the Hindu Jagaran Manch on Saturday.
During the lockdown period, “nine cases of love jihad” were filed in different police stations of the state, claimed Uttam Dey , President of Tripura unit of the Manch. Bu an official disagreed that no such record are present in the police headquarters here.
However, a man of another faith kidnapped a minor girl was at Boxanagar in Sepahijala district, another police official claimed. She was rescued, but the accused is yet to be arrested.
States that are operated by BJP such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh have decided to implement laws to counter attempts to convert Hindu women to Islam in the form of marriage, which right-wing activists refer to as “love jihad”.
Dey alleged, “Love Jihad is posing a threat to our society and Hindu women. The police have failed to protect Hindu girls. They also failed to contain the agenda of extensive religious conversion. Unless a law is enacted, this menace will continue”.
At Boxanagar and Bishalgarh police stations in Sepahijala district and Udaipur in Gomati district “Cases of love jihad” were filed in between the lockdown duration, but not a single arrest was made, he claimed.
Two weeks ago at Bishalgarh police station, another case was filed, but it was found during the investigation that she was an adult and had eloped with a man, said a Police official.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Udaipur, Dhrubha Nath said, the Manch blocked the National Highway 8 which was blocked at Udaipur in Gomati district was lifted after some time.
