Two women cyclists who are presently on Trans Himalaya Cycling Expedition reached Namchi today morning with the messages of ‘Akhanda Ganga’, ‘Swachh Himalaya’, ‘Kartavya Ganga’ and ‘women empowerment’.
Upon their arrival at Namchi, Shruti Rawat and Savita Mahato were accorded a warm welcome by members of youth organisation ‘Voice’ and were escorted to Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Ecotourism (IHCAE) at Chemchey and Chardham at Solophok.
Shruti and Savita started their Trans Himalaya Cycling Expedition on February 2 from Attari Border in Punjab with a mission to spread the message and awareness on ‘Akhanda Ganga’, ‘Swachh Himalaya’, ‘Kartavya Ganga’ and ‘women empowerment’. From Attari border, they proceeded to Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, and entered Nepal via Uttarakhand before reaching and Sikkim via Darjeeling on April 7. From Sikkim, these women cyclists will proceed towards Assam and end their expedition in Arunachal Pradesh.
So far they have covered a distance of 4,500 kilometres and they plan to end their journey in next 17-18 days.
Savita is the first Indian and the youngest cyclist to cover 12,500 kilometres of India by cycle and also the first Indian to reach Nepal’s Thorangla pass (5,416m). On the other hand, Shruti is a member of Kartavya Foundation of Uttar Kashi and a cricketer. She is presently pursuing master’s degree in Mathematics.
