Amid Covid crisis across the country, The Election Commission of India (EC) will conduct a video conference on Wednesday to assess vote preparations in Manipur. The EC convened on Tuesday to discuss holding elections in the midst of the country’s COVID-19 outbreak.
The meeting with Manipur officials will be the final one, as the EC has already visited poll-bound states such as Punjab, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Goa.
The meeting will be with political parties and state government officials to receive pertinent input on the progress of election preparations.
Following the receipt of a report from the Union Health Secretary, the Commission convened meetings to update the COVID-19 recommendations.
According to sources, harsher limitations will be announced soon, with restrictions on crowds and other forms of publicity. Sushil Chandra, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), stated on December 30 in Lucknow that leaders from all political parties who met with him during his visit stated that the Assembly elections should be held on schedule and in accordance with all COVID-19 procedures.
This is a clear indicator that the polls in the poll-bound states will not be postponed. The CEC stated to the media at the conclusion of his three-day visit that Uttar Pradesh now has 52.08 lakh new voters who will exercise their franchise in the upcoming Assembly elections.
“In view of the increase in number of voters and also the prevailing pandemic condition, we have decided to set up 11,000 more polling booths to ensure that there is no crowding. With this, there will also be an increase in the number of polling personnel. We are also increasing the polling time by one hour across the State to prevent crowding at polling stations,” he said.
