Sanjay said of Alia’s character Gangubai in an interview with Variety, “The women who are weak, who are lost in this big bad world—this is a woman who’s fought for them.” It’s about empowering all of these women and saying, “You are who you are,” and accepting who you are. And I really like the thought where she says, ‘If you’re a teacher, professor, doctor, or engineer, then I’m a prostitute.’

Accept me as I am, and accept my profession, because this profession is not going away. We are on the outskirts of society, but we want to be accepted because society cannot function without prostitution; it will always exist.’ “What captivated me was her belief in herself and her fight for dignity.”

When asked about Alia’s performance in the role, he stated, “We started working on her voice level to bring the note down, because she speaks slightly on a higher note, and the power in the eyes to find the attitude in speaking and talking, because she comes from very high society, the urban, upper-class lifestyle that she lives in — for her to go to this world, to the other side of it completely, we started working on her voice level to bring the note down, because she speaks slightly on a higher note, and the power in the eyes to find the attitude in speaking and talking And I realized she has so much in her that she picks up on everything so quickly. And she quickly transformed into that woman, Gangubai.”
