General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), will be cremated on Friday in the presence of top army officials from neighbouring countries. Senior military officials from Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan will pay their respects to Gen Rawat. Sri Lanka’s Chief of Defence Staff and Army Commander, Gen Shavendra Silva, is expected to attend.

It’s worth noting that Gen Bipin Rawat, the Indian army chief, was given the title of honorary general of the Nepalese Army. In 2017, he was also made an honorary General of the Nepal Army at a special ceremony held at the residence of the Nepalese President. The Indian and Nepali armies confer honorary ranks on each other’s chiefs, indicating the two countries’ close ties.

While top military officials from Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan will attend CDS Rawat’s cremation in New Delhi, envoys from foreign missions based in Delhi will also be present. After CDS Rawat, his wife Madhulika, and 11 others died in a fatal IAF helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the world began to send condolences

CDS Rawat’s body will be flown to New Delhi for cremation on Friday, while Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan will send their top general Rawat’s body, along with the bodies of others killed in the helicopter crash. At the military hospital in Wellington, wreaths were laid for CDS by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary, Air Force Chief. The Indian Air Force chopper crashed shortly after taking off from Sulur Air Force Base in Coimbatore at 11:45 a.m. It was scheduled to land in 10 minutes.

The United States, Russia, France, Israel, the United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, Czech Republic, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Singapore, EU, Sweden, Bangladesh, Oman, Iran, UAE, and Greece have all responded to Gen Rawat’s untimely death.

It’s worth noting that Bhuta Prime Minister Lotay Tshering, as well as the presidents of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, were among the first world leaders to express their condolences. Foreign mission officials and envoys based in Delhi will also be present to represent their countries. After CDS Rawat, his wife Madhulika, and 11 others died in a fatal IAF helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, the world began to send condolences.

Condoling Gen Rawat’s demise, US Defence Secretary Lloyd J. Austin said that CDS “left an indelible mark” on the defence partnership of both countries. In a statement, Austin said, “General Rawat left an indelible mark on the course of the U.S.-India defence partnership and was at the centre of the Indian Armed Forces’ transformation into a more jointly integrated warfighting organization. I had the privilege of meeting with him earlier this year and viewed him as a valued partner and friend of the United States.”
