On Thursday morning, a blast and fire at a chemical factory in central Gujarat’s Panchmahals district killed at least two people and injured 15 others.
The explosion happened around 10 a.m. at Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL), a chemical manufacturing plant near Ranjitnagar village in Ghoghamba taluka.
Two people were killed, according to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s office. Patel’s office said in a statement that the district administration was in constant contact with the chief minister.
A huge blast, which preceded the devastating fire, was heard 10 kilometres away, according to officials in Godhra, the Panchmahals district headquarters.
Firefighters from the nearby towns of Godhra, Haalol, and Kaalol rushed to the scene and fought the raging fire for more than five hours.
Leena Patil, the superintendent of police in Panchmahal, said rescuers were looking for survivors and injured. According to the news agency PTI, the officer stated, “The fire is under control.”
In Haalol town, at least 15 injured workers were rushed to a referral hospital and a private facility.
Because of the toxic gases in the air, the administration has cordoned off a 5-kilometer radius around the chemical factory.
The rescue operations were overseen by District Collector Sujay Mayatra and SP Leena Patil, as well as a team of senior district officials.
