India reports 8,318 new Covid-19 cases; death toll rose by 465

On Saturday, 8,318 new cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) were reported in India, down 21.14 percent from the previous day, bringing the total number of infections to 3,45,63,749. At the same time, according to data released by the Union health ministry at 8 a.m., the death toll rose by 465 to 4,67,933.

The total number of active cases in the country is 1,07,019. Meanwhile, 10,967 people have been released in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of people released to 3,39,88,797. According to government data, India’s recovery rate is now at 98.34%, the highest since March 2020.

Despite the fact that the number of new cases in India has dropped to a manageable level, the Union health ministry directed states and union territories on Friday to begin rigorous screening and testing of all international travellers in light of the omicron outbreak.

Travelers coming from or transiting through Botswana, South Africa, and Hong Kong – all of which have reported cases of the new variant so far – were given instructions.

According to the health ministry, India’s cumulative vaccination coverage against the viral disease has surpassed 1.21 billion, with more than 73.58 lakh vaccines administered in the last 24 hours.

The country’s positivity rate has remained below one percent (0.88 percent) for the past 13 days, according to weekly data.
