Following persistent nighttime rain in the national capital, a police officer travelling through Delhi’s Dwarka neighbourhood had a close call as the car was swallowed in bonnet first as the road below crumbled.
The white SUV was later removed with the help of a crane, according to Delhi Police. As his automobile was swallowed by a pit several feet deep, Constable Ashwani managed to escape unharmed.
Locals who had congregated around the sinkhole had the area around it roped off with stones.
Last month, a car parked in a residential complex in Mumbai vanished in seconds into a well that had been partially covered to form a parking area that caved in after heavy rain. Incidents of floods, drowning, traffic congestions were recorded across national capital.
In the last 24 hours, Delhi has received 70 mm of rain, while Gurgaon has received 40 mm. Rainfall below 15 mm is deemed “mild,” between 15 and 64.5 mm “moderate,” between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm “heavy,” and between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm “extremely heavy,” according to the Indian Meteorological Department. Rainfall above 204.4 mm is classified as “very heavy.”
