S Jaishankar, India’s external affairs minister, reviewed bilateral relations with his American and Russian counterparts this week, ahead of planned interactions with both countries in a variety of areas.
On Tuesday, Jaishankar tweeted that he had a wide-ranging conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday night about “current bilateral issues, the Indo-Pacific, and pressing global issues.”
The discussion took place ahead of a planned 2+2 meeting between India’s and the United States’ defence and foreign ministers. The meeting was originally scheduled for November of last year, but it was postponed for a variety of reasons. The dialogue will aid cooperation in a number of key areas, including the Indo-Pacific and defence research and manufacturing collaboration.
In another tweet, Jaishankar said he spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday evening and discussed the follow-up to the annual summit and 2+2 meeting, both of which took place on December 6 in New Delhi. “We agreed to keep in touch on a regular basis,” he added.
According to a statement released by the Russian embassy, Lavrov and Jaishankar discussed “practical issues of bilateral cooperation” as a follow-up to the results of the India-Russia Summit during their phone conversation, which was initiated by the Indian side.
In the spheres of economy and investments, nuclear energy, space, high technologies, and healthcare, the two ministers “confirmed the intention to consistently strengthen relations of the special and privileged strategic partnership between the two states,” according to the statement.
They talked about getting ready for upcoming high-level meetings, such as the Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation and other meetings between the two foreign ministries’ leadership.
Jaishankar and Lavrov also agreed to take steps to increase cooperation in regional and international affairs, including at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the BRICs grouping, the Russia-India-China (RIC) grouping, the United Nations, and the United Nations Security Council.
