On Saturday, the Centre is expected to sign a tripartite Karbi Peace Accord in New Delhi. The meeting is anticipated to be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and members of Karbi organizations along with representatives of Karbi outfits are expected to be present at the meeting.
The Karbi Peace Accord is significant because it relates to the insurgency by the Karbis, a state ethnic group that has a lengthy history in the state in terms of killings, violence, ethnic disputes, kidnapping, and extortion going back to the late 1980s.
The agreement will be signed with three units of the Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), and Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers(KPLT) at the Ministry of Home Affairs North Block office at 4 p.m. on Saturday evening.
Nearly 200 Karbi militants would be present when the accord is signed in New Delhi on Saturday. They were among the 1040 militants from five Karbi Anglong districts groups who put down their arms and surrendered to the Assam government in Guwahati, in the presence of former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 25, 2021,
On that day, the former militants surrendered 338 weapons, including eight-light machine guns, over 11000 rounds, 11 M-16 rifles, and 58 Ak-47 rifles.
The militants that have surrendered belong to the Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), United Peoples Liberation Army (UPLA), and Kuki Liberation Front (KLF).
When the BJP signed the Bodo Peace Accord to stop the long-running conflict in Bodoland, the militants of the five organizations came to surrender their weapons after a year. The Bodoland Territorial Council is an elected body that administers the autonomous territorial area of Bodoland.
